In recent years, driven by technological competition and innovation among dental material manufacturers, dental materials have undergone significant development. Today, although a wide variety of dental materials are available on the global market, there are no substantial differences in their clinical performance. The focus of development has now shifted toward simplification and efficiency, and we recognize that the field of dental materials has reached a stage of maturity.
Meanwhile, in academic fields, the concept of “bioactivity” has gained increasing attention as a new defining characteristic of dental materials. Materials emphasizing this concept have been widely introduced into the global market. ▶ References 1
This is because dental materials have been identified as a means of addressing current challenges, such as the occurrence of secondary diseases associated with dental materials and reduced longevity caused by issues at the interface between the materials and tooth structure.
However, due to the lack of a clear and unified definition of “bioactive,” concerns have arisen that the term is being used ambiguously. In response, the World Dental Federation (FDI) issued a policy statement on bioactive restorative materials in 2022.

In 2000, Shofu introduced its bioactive material, S-PRG filler, which releases multiple ions, and the corresponding dental material concept, Giomer, at the IADR meeting in Washington, D.C. ▶ References 3 Over the past 25 years, research institutions around the world have studied the bioactive effects of S-PRG filler and Giomer. As a result, the volume of scientific evidence, including peer-reviewed publications, continues to grow, and international interest in Giomer has increased significantly.
In light of these developments, Shofu fully supports this statement. Adopting a patient-first approach, we are committed to promoting the development of Giomer, a bioactive dental material that contributes to maintaining a healthy oral environment and extending the life of teeth.
